The Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) has launched a campaign called 'Flip 'n' Flush' to address a growing problem: improperly disposed items are clogging pipes and overloading sewage networks. The campaign targets consumer behaviour by clarifying what can and cannot safely enter toilet systems.
Blockages from incorrectly flushed materials—including wet wipes, sanitary products, cotton buds and cooking grease—create costly repairs across residential and municipal infrastructure. Water companies increasingly bear the burden of clearing obstructions, driving up operational costs that ultimately affect service charges and public budgets.
For building services engineers and facilities managers, this campaign underscores a critical maintenance challenge. Preventive education reduces emergency call-outs and extends the lifespan of internal drainage systems. Specifying appropriate drainage solutions and educating end-users on proper usage protects both capital assets and operational budgets. The campaign reflects industry recognition that blockage prevention starts with user awareness, not engineering alone.
