Mitsubishi Electric UK has launched the City Multi Hybrid VRF, a climate control system that pairs traditional refrigerant circuits with hot water distribution. The combination targets the growing pressure from tightened F-Gas regulations and the industry's shift towards decarbonising commercial buildings.
Hybrid VRF systems have gained traction across Europe as operators seek ways to reduce refrigerant charge while maintaining performance. By using hot water loops alongside the refrigerant cycle, the system lowers environmental impact and offers flexibility for building retrofit projects where water infrastructure already exists.
For facilities managers and HVAC engineers, the hybrid approach presents a middle path between full refrigerant systems and heat pump solutions. It addresses compliance risks around F-Gas phase-down schedules whilst avoiding complete system overhauls. The move signals that major manufacturers are now actively repositioning product lines to meet regulatory and sustainability expectations in commercial building stock.
